I finally watched it (but in 2-D cos Mark Kermode said it doesn’t make any difference to watch it in 3-D).
The CGI’s really good. Insects, flowers and other stuff seems to be very close to the description in the book. I’ve read the books back to back, inside out and many times over the years (Alice In Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass).
Mia Wasikowska is okay as Alice. Sullen looking at times but somehow fits the surroundings.
Johnny Depp excels in those half-drunken, half mad roles (similar to Pirates of the Caribbean, Charlie & the Chocolate factory and even Edward Scissorshand). All the madness from all Depp’s films roled into one. But he plays a very convincing Mad Hatter and no one else would have played it better. I would say, same goes for the Red Queen played by Helena Bonham Carter. I always enjoyed watching Depp and Carter together. They make great madness. Anne Hathaway is good but i am not used to seeing her blond-white. Matt Lucas is superb!!
You’ll never miss the voice of Stephen Fry and they drew the cat exactly like depicted in the book. Timothy Spall as the caterpillar and his voice reminds me of Alan Rickman. Same drawl. And yes, the two chaps starred in Harry Potter. For a while I thought it was Rickman’s voice. Really. And I had to google to check.
I thoroughly enjoyed the white hare. Really cute. The doormouse’s was a mad as the Mad Hatter.
Overall, it was a good movie. Plot’s decent. Good flow. If you have read the books (the original ones, okay!) then you will really enjoy the movie because Tim Burton has brought to life alot of well-loved characters from the book.
